FACTOID: I saw an exhibit of prints by Katsushika Hokusai at the Art Institute of Chicago many years ago. The one print that kept drawing me in was ‘Under the Great Wave off Kanagawa’. Here is a picture of the Great Wave.
The Great Wave is one of 36 woodblock prints created around 1830. See the wave curling over the boats? Scholars have interpreted it to depict the irresistible force of nature and the weakness of human beings. You can glimpse Mt. Fuji (Japan) in the distance.
